Governing Body of the N. C. Indian Housing Authority The Indian Housing Authority is governed by an eleven member Board of Commissioners, with commissioners selected from the following NC State recognized Indian Tribes: Haliwa-Saponi, Coharie, Waccamaw Siouan, Meherrin, Sappony and Lumbee Tribes, and the four Urban Indian Associations that are officially recognized by the State of NC. These are Cumberland County Association for Indian People, Guilford Native American Association, Metrolina Native American Association and Triangle Native American Society. Commissioners are recommended by the Governing Bodies of the aforenamed Tribes and Association’s and then formally appointed to the Board of Commissioners by the Governor of NC. Each Commissioner serves a five-year term and may be reappointed for successive five-year terms. The initial Board of Commissioners was appointed in 1985, and the first Executive Director was employed in 1987.
